Having been there on the day, 9/11 is especially important for me. I left NYC a year or so afterwards, having witnessed a city finally coming to terms with its vulnerability – a truth we'd had to live with in London for many years. I later returned to the Ground Zero memorial and was thankful for its measured approach (in stark contrast to the mawkish memorabilia available all around the city). This moment summed it all up for me.
